奈良時代（８世紀）書写の紫紙金字経の断簡が「紫切」と称して手鑑に貼られて伝存する。色彩が深い紫色であるところからの命名。紫紙は、漉きあがった斐紙（雁皮紙）を紫草の根で染め、椿の灰汁を媒染して染めあげた浸染（つけぞめ）の料紙。極楽世界には紫雲たなびくと説かれたり、また紫色を帯びた最も純度の高い最上質の黄金を「紫磨金（しまごん）」と呼ぶなど、七宝（七種の宝）の筆頭たる「金」を象徴するものでもあったところから、奈良時代の写経料紙として尊重された。書写された経典は『金光明最勝王経』あるいは『華厳経』（八十巻本）である。この断簡は後者。巻第六十八「入法界品第三十九之九」の部分。筆者を菅原道真〈すがわらのみちざね・845-903〉と伝称するが、書風から明らかなように、奈良朝写経の全盛期、天平年間の書写。道真にちなんで「河内切」「北野切」「筑紫切」とも呼ばれる。
