手島堵庵〈てじまとあん・1718-86〉は、江戸時代中期の心学者。名は信。京都の商家に生まれ、家職のかたわら石田梅岩〈いしだばいがん・1685-1744〉について心学（学問の綱領は万物の性を知ることにあり、それは心によらねばならないと説く学問）を修めた。梅岩の没後、宝暦11年〈1761〉に家督を嫡男に譲り、天明６年〈1786〉に死去するまで、心学の布教と統制に専心した。堵庵の教学は、日常卑近な生活の中に道徳の実践を説いたために、町人・武士・農民など下級階層までに広く受け入れられた。心学の普及に貢献した功績は特筆される。これは『論語』（雍也第六）に所収される言葉。「人の生けるや直なればなり」と読む。もともと、人間の性は善である。すなわち、天性の正直にしたがっていればこそ、人は生きていける、との意。独特の筆法で親しみのある書である。
