Okamoto Hansuke (1575-1657), a military strategist of the early Edo Period, was born into the Isonokami family but later adopted the Okamoto surname. Although he went by the common name of Hansuke, his real name was Nobunari. He served the Takeda Clan and later became a military strategist under Iyi Naotaka (1590-1659), the feudal lord of Hikone Province. Hansuke excelled not only in swordsmanship but also in the arts of tanka (short verse) composition, tea ceremony and India ink brush painting, in which he showed a special talent. This is an interesting rendition of five characters written in four different styles, namely the formal block script (kaisho), casual script (gyosho), cursive script (sosho) and scribe’s script (reisho). The brushstrokes of the first two characters end in a typical Daishi style. The poem sings that all things are short-lived like a dream on a spring night. It was perhaps written when Hansuke was around 70 years old.
