Ikeda Mitsumasa (1609-1682) was a military general of the early Edo Period and the feudal lord of Okayama Province. He was the son of Ikeda Toshitaka (1584-1616) and Tsuruko, the second daughter of Sakakibara Yasumasa (1548-1606). His childhood name was Yoshitaka. When Tokugawa Iemitsu (1604-1651) was appointed the Shogun by the imperial edict of 1623, young Yoshitaka was allowed to use one character from the Shogun’s name. Thereupon, Yoshitaka’s name was changed to Mitsumasa at age 15. When his father died, Mitsumasa was considered too young to inherit the large fief in Okayama, so he was moved to a smaller domain in Tottori, living at the Tottori Castle. Later, however, Mitsumasa returned to Okayama Castle to start his administration. He studied Confucianism under Kumazawa Banzan (1619-1691) and other scholars, established schools and was admired by his subjects as a competent ruler. The exhibit shows a waka poem praising the beauty of the Eight Scenic Spots in the Ohmi area stretched to the south of Lake Biwa. It is not signed, but by comparing it with Mitsumasa’s other certified brushworks, the exhibit seems to be genuinely written by him, true to the traditional belief. It is also a fine example that speaks of the profound breadths and lengths of Mitsumasa’s scholarship. The last two poems are artistically scattered across the gorgeous sheet, using a mixture of kanji (Chinese characters) and kana (Japanese syllables). Perhaps this work was made upon commission to be an exemplar.
