Takatsukasa Kanehiro (1659-1725) was a noble of the early Edo Period and was born a legitimate son to Regent Fusasuke (1637-1700). He was given an aristocratic rank at age 7, and was given the post of Provisional Major Counselor at age 13, and then the Minister of the Interior in 1681. These spectacular career advances owed greatly to his noble birth. Later, he served both as the Minister of the Right and the Left, and reached the highest court post of Regent and Clan Leader in 1703. In addition to poetry, he was talented in calligraphy. Kanehiro died in 1725 at age 67.The exhibit shows only the Japanese waka poem out of the series of “Eight views of the Xiao and the Xiang” poems. The view of the lake and rivers in southern China had been known for their scenic beauty down through history. This book was long used as a textbook to practice waka writing and calligraphy. Silver and gold mud is used to draw the mist patterns, and then simple flowers and grass motifs decorate the ryoshi. The poems are written in several different scattered-letter styles. Obviously, it was a decorated exemplar made for the rich and famous. The Reigen School features thick and heavy lines and attests to Kanehiro’s competence. The note at the back says Kanehiro wrote this in January 1689 at age 31.
