Ota Nanpo (1749-1823) was a man of literature during the latter part of the Edo Period and is more known by his pseudonym, Shokusan-Jin. He inherited his family name and fortune at age 17 and became a competent bureaucrat in the military administration. His profound learning and versatile literary talents enabled him to write kyoka and kyoshi, poetry with humorous and satirical tones, which soon became great hits, making Shokusan-Jin a leading figure in Edo’s literary circles. In calligraphy, he excelled in cursive script as well as hiragana syllabary, showing an unaffected easy-going style. The exhibited piece is a brush-and-ink rendition of Nanpo’s own humorous poem from his Hyakushu Kyoka (lit. Hundred Humorous Poems, pub. 1818). The characteristic brushstrokes and the delicate balance of blank spaces between the flowing letters showcase the writer’s aesthetic taste. Although his style is categorized into Karayo (Chinese style), the exhibited piece has a Japanese feel, proving Nanpo’s versatile skills.
Mr. Fuji faces Suruga (Shizuoka Pref.) with its back against Kai (Yamanashi Pref.). The Imperial Guards of the North protect its northern front, and the poet Saigyo (1118-1190; his name lit. means “going west”) looks up at the peak from the west.
