伝未詳の称硯子なる人物が蒐集した、古筆切138 枚・短冊616枚の計754枚(末尾の掲示数では切は136とあります)を、手鑑に貼る順序に従って、原寸大で摸刻したものです。江戸初期の古筆・短尺(冊)手鑑の内容的実態を窺える点でも、大変価値の高い資料です。息の長い人気があったようで、現存数もかなり多く、出版者名を改めたものや、延宝3年(1675)版なども存在しており、文政8年(1825)版もあるとされます。最初に聖武天皇筆の大聖武と光明皇后筆の経切(蝶鳥下絵経切)があるのは、一般的な手鑑の順序と同じですが、後に裏面の最初に置かれるようになる 聖徳太子筆の経切がそれに続いているなど、初期的な特徴も見られます。後半部分を占める短冊の中には、原物が現存しているものもあり、比較すると筆跡をかなりよく再現していることが確認できます。(佐々木）
