According to the Yoshino Stories (pub. 1812), there were ten women from the entertainment quarters named “Yoshino.” The only one with a known biography was the second-generation Yoshino Dayu (1606-1643), who was born in 1606 and at age 14 was already the highest-ranking yujo, or high-class prostitute (often known as “geisha” outside Japan). A beautiful woman fortified with deep learning, Yoshino Dayu became famous when the court noble Konoe Nobuhiro (1599-1649) and a wealthy merchant, Haiya Joeki (?-1691), fought over the right to marry her, with Joeki eventually winning her hand.Even though there is no proof that the exhibit was indeed written by the aforementioned well-known Yoshino, the original poem written on the elegantly decorated ryoshi (gold-mud plant motifs on fabric-patterned silk) and the refined brushstrokes make her the most likely candidate, as she was a highly talented woman calligrapher.

The smoke rises in the lover’s heart like the smoke off Mt. Fuji.
