Ozawa Roan (1723-1801) was an Osaka-born poet and waka scholar of the later Edo Period. While studying under a noble, Reizei Tamemura (1712-1774), Roan was expelled from the school for deviating from the teacher’s poetic style (Traditional poetic secrets like poem interpretations were revealed strictly through master-student relationship.)The proponent of poem writing using correct, plain styles without overt artificiality and true to the spirit expressed in the preface of the aforementioned anthology, Roan was later hailed as one of the “Four Kings of Heian-Style Poetry” along with Chogetsu (1714-1798), Ban Kokei (1733-1806) and Priest Jien (1748-1805).Roan first trained himself in the Teika-style of calligraphy but later adopted the Jodai (classical) style. He loved Manyoshu-style syllabary (manyo-gana), clearly distinguishing each letter and shunning away from the flowing style in which different letters were linked together. Roan scattered the letters across the paper in a unique style of his own. Exhibit shows a mixture of thick and thin lines, reminding one of the Koetsu style. The shaky hand suggests that it was written in old age.

“Viewing the moon till late” Will the murmur of the faraway river reach the moon hanging in the sky?
