花山院師賢〈かざんいんもろかた・1301-32〉は、内大臣師信〈もろのぶ・1275-1321〉の長男。花園天皇〈はなぞのてんのう・1297-1348〉、後醍醐天皇〈ごだいごてんのう・1288-1339〉に仕え、正二位・大納言まで昇進した。正中の変（正中元年〈1324〉、後醍醐天皇が鎌倉幕府討伐を企て未遂に終わった事件）ならびに元弘の乱（同じく後醍醐天皇による元弘元年〈1331〉の挙兵）に参画したが、捕えられ、出家、素貞（そてい）と号した。下総国（千葉県）に流され、同地で32歳の生涯を閉じた。師賢は和歌に優れ、南朝の准勅撰集『新葉和歌集』には、じつに49首もの歌が採られている。その書は、懐を広く構え、筆先のきいた、切れ味の鋭いのびのびとした運筆である。独特の書風に加え、署名はとくに字体の崩しが著しく、花押に近いものとなっている。料紙は素紙。
