切り抜きは破壊行為／書物愛？
「書物破壊者」を意味する英単語 ‘biblioclast’は、愛書家 ‘bibliophile’ と対極をなすかのようだが、実は書物を求めるがゆえに古書を解体した人たちの例は、古今東西枚挙にいとまがない。本展示の写本零葉もここに展示する切り抜き帖も、書物愛好家/破壊者の手にかかり現在の姿となった。展示ページには整然とアルファベットが並ぶが、これらは16世紀の刊本から切り取られたものである。その典拠は不明であったが、バーゼルの印刷業者ヴァレンティン・クーリオ（Valentine Curio, fl. 1522–34）が使用した、ハンス・ホルバイン（子）による図案の木版イニシャルの可能性が高い。Victoria and Albert Museumのコレクション・データベースに同じものが見出される（Cf. Jennings, pp. 35–36）。
展示書には、他にも挿絵や標題紙の切り抜きが多数貼り付けられている。好みの挿絵やイニシャルを初期刊本や中世写本から切り取り集めたスクラップブックは、19世紀から20世紀にかけて盛んに作られた（展示書no. 20も、そうした「愛好家/破壊者」の仕業かも知れない）。20世紀を代表する書誌学者フィリップ・ギャスケル（Philip Gaskell, 1926–2001）の旧所蔵者である。(ST)
