The son of Jimyoin Motoharu, Motonori (1492-1551) was named Iechika in childhood. He lived at a time of constant wars and upheavals, and from his mid 30’s till the final years of his life, he lived under the patronage of provincial military generals. He first lived in Noto Province (Ishikawa Prefecture), then in Mino Province (Gifu Prefecture), and finally in Suo Province (Yamaguchi Prefecture), as the house guest of Lord Ohuchi Yoshitaka. Deeply attracted to aristocratic refinement, Yoshitaka welcomed Motonori, and the two soon became close friends. In 1549, the 58-year-old Motonori was appointed Provisional Middle Counselor, but in August 1551, he became a monk at age 60 and took the Buddhist name of Soei. Immediately afterwards, Yoshitaka was assassinated by one of his own generals, Sue Harutaka, and upon hearing this, Motonori committed suicide. In calligraphy, Motonori loyally followed the Jimyoin School, established by his father Motoharu.

Journey: Winds gushing from the direction of the inn I’m headed for keep me from crossing the Fuwa-no-Seki Barrier (lit. “Impassable Barrier”; Gifu Prefecture).
