Anegakoji Mototsuna (1441-1504), the son of Masaie, inherited the family-held position of governor of Hida Province. It was Mototsuna’s grandfather Ietsuna who was first nominated provincial governor, and the family, thereafter, was called the Hida Household. Mototsuna reached his highest government post, Provisional Middle Counselor, at age 65 but died the very same year in Hida, where he had been stationed. His Buddhist name was Joshin. In poetry, Mototsuna studied waka composition under Asukai Masachika (1417-90), later becoming a brilliant poet. He left behind several literary editions, including the Hikai Shu (lit. Collection of My Humble Thoughts), a private collection. As in waka composition, Mototsuna’s calligraphy was heavily influenced by Asukai Masachika, who gave rise to the Eiga Style. The brushstrokes exhited here progress rhythmically, testifying to the great skill Mototsuna had attained. The title “The Pine” is written by a different hand.

The Pine: If reputed people know their limitations, their reputations will not fail, just like the ever green pines of Takasago. (Notes: Today’s Takasago City is in Hyogo Prefecture.)
