Ashikaga Yoshiteru (1536-65) was the 13th shogun of the Muromachi military government. Born the first son of Shogun Yoshiharu (1511-50), he was named Kikudo (lit. “Chrysanthemum Boy”) in infancy. At his coming of age, celebrated in 1546, his name was changed to Yoshifuji, and he inherited the shogun’s title on the following day at age 11, as his father retired. His name was changed again at age 19 to Yoshiteru (1554). Fleeing from the war-torn capital, Yoshiteru resided in Sakamoto, Ohmi Province (Shiga Prefecture), but briefly returned to Kyoto in 1548. When a military conflict developed against General Miyoshi Nagayoshi in the following year, Yoshiteru again fled to Sakamoto. Upon Nagayoshi’s death by illness in 1564, Yoshiteru endeavored to restore the authority of the Ashikaga military government; however, he was assailed by the army of Matsunaga Hisahide, who had learned of the plan. Yoshiteru was eventually forced to take his own life at the young age of 30. Shogun Yoshiteru was a well-trained calligrapher of the Torikai School, modeled after Torikai Sokei (years of birth and death unknown) and a spinoff of the Oie School, which had sprung to prominence toward the end of the Muromachi Period. The Torikai School attracted a large number of followers among military rulers and renga and haikai poets. This Tanzaki is signed “Yoshiteru”, it was written between the ages of 19 and 30, the years before he died.
Bush Warbler in Early Morn: The songs of a bush warbler draw me out. The morning mist has cleared, and the spring air is fragrant with the fields.
