Ashikaga Yoshihisa (1465-89) was the 9th shogun, or supreme commander of the military government, during the Muromachi Period. He was the first-born son of Hino Tomiko (1440-96), sired by the 8th Shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimasa. When Yoshimasa retired from the shogun’s post, his younger brother Yoshimi and his son and heir, Yoshihisa, engaged in a bitter feud over succession to shogun. The family conflict eventually led to the devastating Onin War. In the midst of the war, Yoshihisa, only 9 years old, was appointed the new shogun (1473), though the retired shogun Yoshimasa continued to wield power and authority. Seeking a guiding philosophy for his government, Shogun Yoshihisa commissioned Ichijo Kaneyoshi (1402-81) to be his counsel. In response, Ichijo authored a political and administrative guidebook titled Shodan Chiyo. In 1487, Shogun Yoshihisa moved his army to Ohmi to subjugate Rokkaku Takayori (1462-1520) and his rebel forces, but died in action in March only two years later. Yoshihisa was only 25. Excelling at waka composition, Yoshihisa left behind a private collection of his poems, the Jotoku-In-Shu(lit. Jotoku-In Collection of Poems). The exhibited tanzaku shows signs of a young writer and was possibly written in Yoshihisa’s early 20s. The style is subdued and calm, reflecting the influence of his father, Yoshimasa, who was known for a noble and elegant style.
Summer Moon during a Journey: Like the joints on the reeds in Naniwa Bay are short, the moon glows fleetingly in the summer night sky.
