尭然法親王〈ぎょうねんほうしんのう・1602-1661〉は、後陽成天皇（ごようぜいてんのう）の第六皇子。母は持明院基孝（じみょういんもとたか）の女孝子（たかこ）。慶長８年〈1603〉常胤法親王（じょういんほうしんのう）の資（弟子）として妙法院（みょうほういん）に入室。同18年〈1613〉親王宣下、名を常嘉（つねよし）と賜る。元和２年〈1616〉得度して、法諱を尭然と号した。第171世、174世、178世と三度にわたり天台座主に補せられた。諸芸に巧みで、画は狩野派の山水画を得意とし、立花・香道・和歌・連歌、いずれの道にも精通した。ことに、茶道は片桐貞昌〈かたぎりさだまさ＝石州・1505-73〉に学んで石州流の奥義を極めたという。書は、生母孝子によって家伝の持明院流の手ほどきを受けたことは疑いないが、加えて当人の天賦の才があった。書流系譜の上では中院（なかのいん）流の系譜に連なるとされる。
