Prince Toshitada (1619-62) was the first-born prince of Katsurano-Miya Prince Toshihito (1579-1629). First named the Hachijono-Miya, the Katsurano-Miya was established in 1589, upon the recommendations of Senior Regent (Jp. Kampaku) Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-98). Together with the three other major princely households, Fushimino-Miya, Arisugawano-Miya, and Kaninno-Miya, these famous families were hailed as “The Four Major Princely Families”. Prince Toshitada was later adopted by his elder cousin, Emperor GoMizuno-o (1596-1680), in 1624 and was declared imperial prince two years later. In 1629, he succeeded his father, Prince Toshihito, to become the second-generation heir of the Katsurano-Miya Family.Favorably influenced by both his real and adopted fathers, who were both artistically and academically inclined, Prince Toshitada studied vigorously and was particularly good at waka composition, calligraphy, and kemari football. In calligraphy, he was particularly known as a master writer of the GoKashiwabara-In School. The exhibited waka kaishi dates back to the New Year’s Poetry Party of January 9, 1636, and was written when the prince was only 18 years old. His young age does not show in the elegantly-flowing brushstroke.
On a spring day, a poem composed with the theme “Mist Adding Color to the Mountains”: As if to celebrate the endless reign of our emperor, Mount Ame-no-Kaguyama (Nara Prefecture) is beaming with multiple colors created by the layers of mist.
