Akiba Motoshige (?-1509) was a military general of the mid-Muromachi Period who became Lord of Matsuyama Castle in Bicchu Province. In 1487 and 1492, Motoshige led his army against the regional strongman, Rokkaku Takayori (1462-1520), upon orders from the 9th Shogun, Ashikaga Yoshihisa (1465-89), and the 10th Shogun, Ashikaga Yoshitane (1466-1523). Rokkaku Takayori was accused of confiscating real estate owned by shrines, temples, and high-ranking government officers in Ohmi Province. It is said that Motoshige campaigned successfully. The exhibited piece is known as the Ippongyo (lit. One-character Sutra) Waka Kaishi, which was composed in the following manner: Each participant of a poetry party (held after a Buddhist service) chose a chapter from among the 30 chapters of the Lotus Sutra, and then composed a waka by interpreting the essence of that chapter. The exhibited kaishi interprets a sermon from “The Merits of the Dharma Preacher” Chapter 19, which asserts that people can see everything and all things in this world, if only they see with the clear vision and the clear mind that their parents had given them. Motoshige’s hand shows a typical aristocratic style, evidence that he had been trained in noblemen’s pursuits, despite being a warrior.
On a winter day, a poem about “the Merits of the Dharma Preacher”, after hearing a sermon on the Lotus Sutra: I have eyes that can see mountains and oceans. How could I fail to see my mother’s love?Reminiscence: Of all the memories of the bygone years, I cherish most my mother’s love and care during the first ten years of my life.
