A court noble of the Muromachi Period, Asukai Masachika (1417-90) was the first-born son of Masayo (1390-1452). In 1473, he became a monk and adopted the religious name of Eiga. The Asukai Family line was respected for being the originator of the arts of kemari (football) and kado (poetry). As such, Masachika was tutored by his father in these disciplines, and he soon made a name for himself and became a central figure in the literary circles at the court. There he privately tutored powerful men as well as known scholars of the time, including Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa (1436-90), Sanjonishi Sanetaka (1455-1537), and Iio Sogi (1421-1502). Also a famous calligrapher, Masachika was the originator of the popular Asukai School, also called the Eiga School. Out of the three waka poems, “Hearing the Cuckoo’s Song on Horseback” is contained in a variant of the Masachika Anthology, published in 1448, and as such, the exhibited kaishi was written when the poet was aged 32.
