Emperor Shomu (701-756) issued an imperial decree on March 24, 741, to establish Kokubunji temples and Kokubun-niji nunneries throughout Japan to disseminate Buddhism, earlier adopted as the national religion. He also decreed that elaborate copies of the Lotus Sutra be made to consecrate these newly erected temples and nunneries across the country. (Note: Kokubunji means “a temple located in each province” and Kokubun-niji means “a nunnery located in each province”.) A copy of the Sutra of the Golden Light of the Most Victorious King Sutra (Jp.: Konko-Myo Saisho-Oh Kyo) was dedicated to each temple, and a copy of the Lotus Sutra in Gold Letters on Blue Paper was dedicated to each nunnery. The exhibit is a fragment of the Lotus Sutra, Chapter Twelve, “Devadatta,” which was given to a nunnery. The letters of the sutra (Buddhist scripture) are copied in gold mud on purple-dyed ryoshi (specially prepared paper for calligraphy) ruled with gold mud. Purple ryoshi was favored for making sutra manuscripts during the Nara Period and was crafted by first dyeing raw paper with plant dyes and then applying lye from camellia to facilitate the dyeing process. Purple was considered the noblest color, as literature describes a purple haze softly enwrapping the heavenly paradise.
