Minase Ujinari (1570-1643) was a courtier in the Edo period. He rose to the Junior Grade of the Second Court Rank with the title of Provisional Middle Counselor. This kaishi is inscribed “a tentative handwriting” in its prefatory note. Courtiers since the aristocratic age made it a custom to try the year’s first writing with brush in the New Year. They drew the year’s first pailful of fresh water on the first or second day of January, prepared ink (by putting a small amount of water on the inkstone and rubbing it with an ink cake), composed a poem or poems with serene state of mind, and took up the first brush for the year. This kaishi bears a waka (31-syllable verse) and a hokku (haiku, 17-syllable verse) each. The generous, sedate strokes of the brush well reflect the personality of the writer. The practice of calligraphy for the new year became prevalent in the Edo period in which terakoya (private school for children) promoted education of the common populace. The practice is still alive today.
