近衛稙家〈このえたねいえ・1503-66〉は関白近衛尚通〈ひさみち・1472-1544〉の子。名門の子弟の例にもれず、破格の昇進を遂げる。23歳で関白に叙せられたのを筆頭に、数々の要職を歴任した。足利幕府との結びつきも強く、稙家の「稙」の１字は、将軍足利義稙〈あしかがよしたね・1466-1523〉から授けられたもの。歌人として高い評価をうけ、父からは古今伝授を受け、子の前久〈さきひさ・1536-1612〉や里村紹巴〈さとむらじょうは・1525-1602〉に伝えた。「試毫」とは書き初めのこと。また和歌の詠い初めを表わす。公卿の年中行事のひとつである。これは七言絶句の漢詩と、和歌を同時に詠んだもの。その書は父尚通にはじまる尚通流を受け継いでいる。関白在任中の23歳から40歳までに書写したものである。「元旦試毫／東君賀を回らせて、雪云に融く。城南城北、梅未だ紅ならず。槊を横たえ、英雄、詩を賦す処、空に簇がる狼燧も又春風。／おさまれる道しありとはしら雪のふるきに春やたちかへるらむ／関白稙家」
