Although Nijo Yasumichi (1607-66) was the first son of Regent Kujo Yukiyie (1586-1665), he was adopted by Nijo Akizane (1556-1619) to inherit the Nijo family name. Seven-year-old Yasumichi’s genpuku (coming of age ceremony) was held in 1613 and he was granted use of the Chinese character “yasu” from the name of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, then the military ruler of Japan. Nijo Yasumichi assumed the post of Imperial Regent in 1635 but resigned 10 years later from all official posts. It is said that Yasumichi studied haikai (or haiku) under Matsunaga Teitoku (1571-1653), and he of course practiced calligraphy, closely imitating the Sonjun School. His poems written on tanzaku paper strips clearly show traces of this school of calligraphy originated by Sonjun Hosshinno. In the letter, Yasumichi discusses time spent with his parents during the mid-summer Bon festival season, so it’s likely that Yasumichi had been visiting his biological father, Yukiyie, and mother (daughter of Middle Counselor Toyotomi Hidekatsu). Yasumichi notes that on the way back home he is going to stay overnight at the Shinzai Home (perhaps Yasumichi’s mansion in Kyoto, near Hamaguri Gate to the imperial palace) and on the following day visit Honkokuji Temple (a Nichiren Sect temple in Yamashina, Kyoto). From the style and content of this letter, it is most likely addressed to Yasumichi’s wife, who was born Princess Sadako (1607-75), the fifth daughter of Emperor Goyozei. Perhaps Sadako was staying with her mother, Chuwamon-In, at the latter’s Ohwada Mansion in Uji.
