Konoe Hisatsugu (1622-53) was the son of Konoe Nobuhiro (1599-1649), who was the younger brother of Emperor Gomizuno-o. As the legitimate heir to the Imperial Regent’s family, Hisatsugu rapidly climbed the ranks of the bureaucracy. He was only 26 when appointed to the Minister of the Left in 1647. In 1651, he was appointed to Regent, but an illness claimed his life at the young age of 32.Hisatsugu wrote this letter to Genga, perhaps a member of the Satomura family known for renga poetry composition, during a stay in Edo. He apologizes for not writing since arriving in Edo and asks how Genga is doing. According to records, Hisatsugu (then 25 years of age) was living in Edo toward the end of April 1646. At this time, Emperor Gomizunoo was suffering from a tumor, which was quickly cured thereafter, and Hisatsugu writes that he is relieved to know that the emperor, at the imperial palace in Kyoto, is recovering. In this letter, Hisatsugu’s writing style is patterned after that of Emperor Gomizuno-o.
