Priest Rennyo (1415-99) was the son of Zonnyo, the 7th bishop of Honganji Temple. After his father’s death, Rennyo succeeded him to become the 8th bishop of Honganji Temple in 1457. He wrote letters to his disciples, describing the Buddhist catechism in easy-to-understand forms, and originated the Ofumi style of writing. There is actually an edited collection of these letters describing Buddhist principles, which later enjoyed a wide reading and thus contributed to the religion’s publicity. Priest Rennyo was revered for reviving the Jodo-Shinshu denomination of Buddhism. (“Jodo” means “Buddhist Pure Land.”)This letter is a reply to a monk with whom Rennyo had developed a friendship. He writes, “despite the hard weather of strong wintry winds, I would like to go and see a tea ceremony.” The calligraphy is characterized by the fluid and expert style, true to the magnanimous spirit of the much-admired priest.
