Sen Soan (1694-1726) was first known by the name of Rikkansai Taiso. However, he later changed his name to Sen Soshitsu and declared himself head of the Ura Senke (Sen family) presiding over the Konnich-An clan, named after a famous tea room. In fact, he was only 11 years old when his father Fukyusai Josu (1763-1704), the fifth heir of the Ura Senke, died, leaving him to be sworn in as the sixth- generation heir. And the young Soshitsu was provided for by Sen-no-Sosa, the sixth-generation heir of the Omote Senke, until he went to Daitokuji to study Zen under Bishop Daishin Gito. Soshitsu’s teacher in Chinese literature and classics was Ito Togai, and he was also trained in theatrical pursuits, such as Noh and kyogen (a farce played between different acts of the serious Noh). At one time, Soshitsu served as Master of Tea Affairs for Hisamatsu Sadanao (1660-1710), the Lord of Matsuyama Castle in Iyo Province (today’s Ehime Prefecture). Unfortunately, he died at the young age of 32. In this letter, Soshitsu, or Soan, shows gratitude for the New Year’s greetings sent him and reports that the family is well. On February 14th or 15th, Soan was scheduled to go up to Edo by way of Osaka. As he expected to stay in Edo for some time, he gives rather detailed instructions about household affairs during this absence. Thus, this letter was likely sent to a family member or a steward.
