A chanoyu connoisseur of the Edo Period, Fujimura Yoken (1613-99) was born the second son of Hisada Soei, a well-known tea aficionado of Kyoto, but was later adopted by the Fujimura family engaged in a clothing business. Yoken practice chanoyu under Kobori Enshu and Kanamori Sowa and later Sen Sotan. After mastery in this art, he started the Yoken School, which attracted a large following through many generations. Tea room designs favored by Yoken have been preserved as “Yodoni-no-Seki” and “Tennen-Zuga Tei” (lit. room with a natural view) in Katada, Ohmi (today’s Shiga Prefecture). Yoken also studied Confucianism under Miyake Boyo and Yamazaki Ansai and, as a result, was a well-learned man with insight into waka poetry and kado (lit. way of flowers) flower arranging, in addition to other pursuits. The addressee, Kitamura Sadayu, refers to Yoken’s disciple Kitamura Yuan (1648-1719), who was often called Kashida Yuan as his residence was in Kashida. He is known to be the originator of Yuan-style pottery. In this letter, Yoken thanks Yuan for the warm reception. He also comments on a tea kettle made by Yuan, which he just recently acquired.
