Governor of Bizen Okayama Province Ikeda Mitsumasa (1609-82) was the son of Ikeda Toshitaka (1584-1616) and the grandson of the famous warlord and governor, Ikeda Terumasa (1565-1613), while his mother was an adopted daughter of Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada. Mitsumasa was appointed governor of Bizen Okayama in 1632 and dedicated his life to the good administration of his people by adopting Confucian doctrine. He hired a noted Confucian scholar, Kumazawa Banzan, and passionately pursued the education of his subjects, as well as furthered his own academic learning. Shizutani School, the provincial school established by Lord Mitsumasa for educating both the samurai and commoners’ children, was particularly famous. Mitsumasa also encouraged the development of arable land in preparation for natural disasters and famines, earning him nationwide recognition for good administration during the early Edo Period.Lord Ikeda Mitsumasa addressed this letter to Nakagawa Hisamori (1594-1653) in thanks for delicacies received for a feast scheduled for the following day. The feast’s guest of honor was Ichijo Norisuke (1590-1664), the bridegroom of Mitsumasa’s first daughter. It is of note that Mitsumasa’s third daughter was married to Nakagawa Hisatsune (1641-95), the grandson of Hisamori, which means, all the concerned parties were later related either by blood or marriage. Reading between the lines, one notices the subtle yet loving feelings of a father. The elegant, powerful strokes suggest that this letter was written in Mitsumasa’s prime, around age 40, and shows the expert administrator’s equal success in mastering calligraphy.
