Saionji Saneharu (1600-73), the son of Minister of the Interior Saionji Kinmasu, was promoted rapidly, becoming Minister of the Interior in 1649, Minister of the Right in 1654, and Minister of the Left in 1667. However, in the December of the following year, he resigned from this high administrative post to become a Buddhist monk. With training in music, brush-and-ink painting, Saneharu exhibited great talent in painting Buddha images. According to the genealogy of calligraphic styles of Saneharu’s time, his writing belonged to the Sanjo School, originated by Sanjonishi Sanataka, and all Saneharu’s extant poems written on tanzaku paper strips testify to his mastery of this style. This letter, however, being private, takes on a different style and expression. The letter shows refined simplicity, perhaps a sign that it was written in old age. From this, one can assume that the addressee, Former Major General Asukai, may be Asukai Masaaki (1611-79), and, from the dates of Saneharu’s retirement to become a monk, 1668, and Masaaki’s resignation from the Major Counselor post, 1655, one can assume the letter was likely written when Saneharu was in his mid-60s. In his writing, Saneharu expresses concern about the safety of Masaaki on a trip he is about to take down to Edo in the biting cold of November. Such concern enables the reader to imagine the warm friendship that must have existed between the two men.
