Okubo Tadachika (1553-1628) became Tokugawa Ieyasu’s attendant in 1568 and later accompanied his master on several military campaigns, fighting brilliantly. In 1593, he was appointed to serve Ieyasu’s heir apparent, Hidetada, and in the following year, he assumed the headship of the family and became Lord of Odawara Castle. Thanks to his loyal service to Shogun Hidetada, Tadachika was highly reputed; however, he incurred Honda Masanobu’s jealousy. In 1613, a scandal erupted involving Okubo Nagayasu, and as Nagayasu’s supporter, Tadachika was also censored and was stripped of his samurai status by Masanobu. In April 1616, upon hearing of his master Ieyasu’s demise, Tadachika took the tonsure and assumed the Buddhist name of Keian Dohaku. He died at age 76 in 1628.This letter is an exchange between Okubo Tadachika and Todo Takatora (1556-1630) dated May 10th, 1611. A little earlier, on March 28th to be exact, Ieyasu, in a very good mood, had successfully convinced Toyotomi Hideyori of Osaka Castle to come out and visit Nijo Castle in Kyoto. After the meeting, Ieyasu returned to Sumpu Castle (in Shizuoka City) on April 18th. The addressee, Todo Takatora, Lord of Anoutsu Castle, in Ise (today’s Mie Pref.), accompanied Generalissimo Ieyasu on his return as far as Yoshida, in Mikawa Province (today’s Toyohashi City, Aichi Pref.) and then went back to Ise. In this letter, Tadachika lauds Takatora for his service and reports that his good works were also reported to Hidetada. The letter goes on to mention that the remodeling of Edo Castle is almost complete. At the time, Okubo Tadachika was 59, and Takatora, 56.
