Suigan Somin (1608-84) was born in Sakai City. His surname was Nakarai, but as he was related to Kogetsu Sogan (1574-1643), the Zen priest of Daitokuji Temple, Somin took the tonsure and changed his name, becoming Sogan’s disciple and later successor. On Mary 18, 1657, Somin was named the 195th bishop of Daitokuji. He was also the first bishop to dwell at the sub-temple of Sunsho-An in the Daitokuji compounds--Sunsho-An being famous for the Sunsho-An Shikishi (calligraphy of ancient poems on square decorated paper), a treasure among ancient calligraphic masterpieces. This letter is addressed to Kohitsu Ryosetsu (1612-75), a well-known calligraphy appreciator who Bishop Suigan came to befriend through a mutual interest in chanoyu. In the letter, the bishop writes that he has no need for the sword, a gift for his new house, despite the fact it is accompanied by a certification stating the name of the craftsman and its value. It is a humorous remark, considering Ryosetsu was a professional art appreciator. Suigan also comments on the much acclaimed Hagi-fired tea bowl, saying that it should be used daily at home since it is a well-crafted fake. These comments reveal the unaffected, straightforward manner of the writer, but there is also much to read between the lines, including the fact that Suigan was anxious to meet Ryosetsu the following day.
