Gyokushitsu Sohaku (1572-1641) was a Rinzai (Ch: Linji) Sect Zen priest. He was the nephew of Shunoku Soen (1529-1611), the bishop of the great Daitokuji Temple, whom Sohaku succeeded as the 147th bishop. In 1607, Emperor Goyozei bestowed upon Sohaku the Zen master’s title of “Jikishi Shingen.” Later, the Maeda family, the Lords of Kaga Province, came to embrace Buddhism ardently and sponsored the construction of the Hoshun-In sub-temple within the Daitokuji compounds. Many of Sohaku’s calligraphy works have been preserved at Hoshun-In.Other valuable pieces of art in the sub-temple, such as poetic inscriptions, were collaborations between Sohaku and his close friends, as well as Buddhist monks such as Takuan Soho (1573-1645) and Kogetsu Sogan (1574-1643). The letter exhibited here is addressed to Yodoya Koan (1577-1643), a successful merchant of Osaka. Sohaku writes that due to illness, he will not be able to do the requested work of calligraphy on a byobu (heavy sliding partition).
