Prince Toshihito (1579-1629) was the sixth prince of Honorary Emperor Yoko (1552-86) and the younger brother of Emperor Goyozei (1571-1617), who had been born of the same mother. At first, Prince Toshihito was adopted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98) to succeed him, but was later allowed to establish his own noble household, Hachijo-no-Miya, or the Hachijo Prince’s Household. He was then adopted by Emperor Ogimachi (1517-93), declared crown prince, and given the new name of Prince Toshihito. But after he founded Katsura Detached Palace, Toshihito was thereafter referred to as the first-generation prince of Katsura-no-Miya. Prince Toshihito studied the secrets of Japanese poetry under Hosokawa Yusai (1534-1610) and was to become the era’s foremost intellectual, thoroughly versed in the fine arts, ceremonial tea, and flower arranging. His talents in Japanese poetry and calligraphy were noteworthy. This letter is addressed to Ano Saneaki (1581-1645) and refers to a poetry composition party, themed ‘sanka’ (lit. ‘mountain hut’), held at court the previous night. In the third verse of his poem from the night, Prince Toshihito wrote the words ‘getting old’, which he asks Saneaki to edit and change to ‘getting old and nearing demise’. As Saneaki’s title was Middle Counselor Ano and since he had this position between the ages of 39 and 53, this letter was written some time when the prince was between 36 and 50 years old.
