Shimazu Iehisa (1576-1638) was a military general of the late Momoyama Period and early Edo Period. The third son of Shimazu Yoshihiro, Iehisa served warlords Toyotomi Hideyoshi and later Tokugawa Ieyasu and also won the favors of Regent Konoe Nobutada (1565-1614), as the Shimazu and Konoe families had been on amicable terms for three generations. Like many other military generals, Iehisa encouraged learning, and he himself was trained in waka and renga poetry, while also being attracted to tea and calligraphy. In this letter, Iehisa asks the recipient to lend him an incense burner and other goods if there are any surpluses. The addressee’s name is simply written as “Letter ‘ha’ of Ise”, perhaps, indicating a woman whose name began with the phonetic Japanese letter ‘ha’. (Note: Likely names are ‘Hatsu’ or ‘Haru’, for example.) Ise Family was a chief vassal of Shimazu Family. The reference to incense burning, a Buddhist practice, suggests that a memorial service was being held for the writer’s deceased father Yoshihiro, who died in 1619.This letter was likely written when Iehisa was in his late 40s. Although not necessarily a masterpiece, the greatly varied, casual brush strokes are definitely the work of a trained calligrapher.
