The exhibit is a copy of the Lotus Sutra Second Scroll (Jp. Hokke-kyo; Sk. Saddharmapundarika Sutra), which corresponds to Chapters 3 and 4 of the Lotus Sutra. Humans are driven by greed and experience pain, delusions, worries and suffering, but they are unaware of their true nature. The Lotus Sutra Chapter 3 likens humanity to small children who are playing in a house, unaware that their house is being consumed by fire on the outside and that a life-threatening danger is closing in on them. The father, as the personification of Buddha, entices the children out of the house by offering gifts of three carts drawn by a sheep, deer and a cow. The children come out of the burning house and thus are saved. In Chapter 4, a father and son become accidentally separated. Over time, the father becomes a rich man, while his son is poverty stricken. The two meet after many years. The father immediately recognizes his son, who, however, is dejected and fearful of the rich man. Seeing this, the rich man gives the young man work cleaning the latrines. Then he disguises himself as another cleaner to befriend his son. After winning his trust, he reveals his true identity and passes on his wealth to his son. In this morale-conjuring story, the rich father represents Buddha and the general public is depicted as the lost son. The animal-drawn carriage on the overleaf is a graphic rendition of Buddha’s teaching in Chapter 3. The postscript reveals that the manuscript was created in December 1380.
