Mouri Terumoto (1553-1625) was a warrior of the Sengoku Period (lit. “Age of Country at War”). His father was Mouri Takamoto (1523-63), and son, Hidenari (1595-1651). He was Lord of Aki Castle in today’s Hiroshima. When Takamoto died a sudden death in 1563, young Terumoto assumed the clan headship and, under the guardianship of his grandfather, the great General Mouri Motonari (1497-1571), took control over the Chugoku region in western Japan. Terumoto successfully deterred an invasion by Oda Nobunaga in 1574. After Nobunaga was murdered at Honnoji Temple, he signed a peace treaty with Hashiba (later Toyotomi) Hideyoshi and was later appointed to be one of the “Five Elders” in the Hideyoshi administration. But in 1600, he was blamed for having been the commander-in-chief of the Western Forces (Hideyoshi’s followers as opposed to the Eastern Forces, organized by Tokugawa Ieyasu), and his possessions were reduced to a mere two provinces in Suho and Choshu (today’s Yamaguchi Prefecture). In the same year, he shaved his head and conceded the clan headship to his son, Hidenari. This letter warns the recipient of foul weather during the planned tea party.
