1921年にサイパンで南洋興発株式会社を設立した松江春次氏が、蘭領ニューギニア探検の際に入手した木製の祖霊像。松江氏の子息が塾生だったこともあり、終戦後、三田キャンパスに所蔵された。「死者の魂」を意味するコルワルと総称される。両膝を立てて胸元に引き寄せた座法で、蹲踞姿勢をとる。多くは身体の前方に棒や杖のような意匠を持つ。コルワルは有力者の死に際して、専門の彫刻師によって作られた。彫刻中に哀悼歌が詠われることによって、祖先の霊魂が像に宿るとされた。完成したコルワルを通して、呪術師に憑依した祖霊に助言を求めたり、大いなる加護があると信じて危険な遠征に帯同したりした。以前のコルワルは首から下の座像で、白骨化した死者の頭蓋骨がその上に乗せられていたが、20世紀初頭にチェンドラワシ湾周辺諸地域でキリスト教が広まると、頭部も木彫で表現された。胴部に比べて頭部が異様に大きい姿形は、以前の名残であろう。

For the first launch, Google Cloud's Vision API will be used to analyze the images of each object and automatically generate keywords.
