狩野山雪〈かのうさんせつ・1589-1651〉は、桃山～江戸初期の京狩野の画家。名は光家、別号は蛇足軒・桃源子など。通称を平四郎、縫殿助。狩野山楽〈さんらく・1559-1635〉の婿養子となった。探幽・尚信・安信の３兄弟が、幕府の御用絵師となって江戸狩野の一派を形成したのに対して、山楽の跡を嗣いだ山雪は、京にとどまって、京狩野の中心的な存在となって活躍した。山楽以来の装飾的画風をさらに一歩推し進めた独自の境地を発揮している。「当麻寺縁起絵巻」（寛永６年〈1629〉ころの作）、妙心寺天球院の障壁画（同８年ころ）、「三十三観音図」（東福寺蔵。正保４年〈1647〉ころ）などの作品が有名である。この屏風は、金地の画面を群青の流水で大胆に分割し、柳の梢を画面の外に設定する。空間の広がりを見せる斬新な構図は山雪ならではのもの。藤の懸かる松の老樹に、水と小鳥を描いた左隻と１対をなす。
