A motodori was a top-knot, or long hair tied in an ornate manner at the top of the head. The exhibit shows a wooden top-knot, most likely broken off from a statue of a Dainichi (Great Sun) Nyorai or a Crowned Amitabha Nyorai (Jp: Hokan Amida). Both represent Buddha at different stages of religious attainment. Basically, only the Buddha figures before reaching enlightenment, except for Jizo (Sk: Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva), would carry the top-knot. The Nyorai, or Buddha after attaining enlightenment, is often depicted devoid of any ornate elements. In Esoteric Buddhism, however, the Dainichi Nyorai, as its center of worship, and a transformed Crowned Amitabha Nyorai are depicted in exceptional decorated forms. This exhibit is likely to have broken off from one such wooden figure.
