これは、牛頭天王を祀った牛頭天王宮（天王社）に掲げられていた社号額。裏面の銘により、寛文13年〈1673〉７月に奉懸されたもの。 牛頭天王は祇園精舎（釈迦が説法を行った寺院）の守護神とされ、日本では神仏習合により、蘇民将来説話の武塔神や素戔嗚尊と同一視された。疫病を鎮める神として信仰され、祇園社および牛頭天王社に祀られたが、明治政府の神仏分離令により、多くの祇園社・牛頭天王社が牛頭天王を素戔嗚尊と切り離し、素戔嗚尊を祭神とするようになった。仏教由来の「祇園」や「牛頭天王」の語を社名から外す神社も多く（京都の祇園社が八坂神社に改称した例が有名である）、この社号額も、そうした風潮により流出したものであろう。
