これは金剛杵（こんごうしょ）である。その姿は、月の兎が餅をつく杵（きね）の形に似た把（は）の両端に、鈷（こ）と呼ばれる鋭い刃をつけたもので、密教独特の法具である。金剛というのは、金剛石の語でも知られるように、ダイヤモンドのごとく堅固であり堅牢であることを意味し、この法具の強さを示している。もともとこの金剛杵は古代インドの武器であり、帝釈天や執金剛神などが手に持っていることで知られる。しかし、密教がこれを取り入れて法具としたのは、実用の武器ではなく、この利器の備える堅固と打ち砕く二徳の力をかりて、人間の心の中の煩悩を打ち砕き、本来の仏法をあらわすための助けとしようとしたものである。鈷の部分が一本の場合は独鈷杵であり、ほかに三鈷杵・五鈷杵がある。これは五鈷杵。細緻な作りと力強いたくましさが、一種いいがたい金工美を発揮する。
