The most frequently appearing animal in Sui and Tang dynasty mirrors is the lion. Although not indigenous to China, ancient chronicles such as Ce Fu Yuan Gui describe that the lion as being brought into China as a precious gift for the emperor from various western domains. The popularity of the lion pattern speaks of the cosmopolitan nature of Tang Dynasty China. (Ce Fu Yuan Gui, lit. “Library of the Big Turtle,” was compiled around 1013 by Wang Qinruo and others, upon imperial edict of the North Sung Dynasty. As the largest known collection of historical records of the Sung, it is particularly valued for its ample description of the Tang Dynasty.)
