The Jin Dynasty was established by the Jurchens of Manchuria (Tungus people who lived in parts of Manchuria and Northern Korea). Many of the Jin mirrors were imitations of Chinese mirrors from the Han, Tang, and Sung dynasties, but a new motif that appeared during this age was the historical event and figure. The mirror featured here depicts an anecdote concerning Xuyou and Chaofu. The story goes that Emperor Yao announced to Xuyou that he would relinquish the throne to him. Upon hearing this, Xuyou replied that such talk polluted his ears and went down to the River Ying to wash them out. So defiled were his ears that he did not let his cow drink from the dirtied river.
