This mirror’s long signature, “Best in the Nation, Nishijima, Lord of Inaba, Fujiwara Yoshikatsu,” has a long story. Due to mirror makers’ abuse of the honorable title “Best in the Nation” and official government titles such as “Lord of Yamashiro” or “Minor Lord of Izumi,” such uses were banned, the honorable title in 1682 and the official titles in 1766. Mirror makers, however, protested so strongly against the ban of official titles that it was lifted in 1772, only six years later. And even though arbitrary use of “Best in the Nation” was banned, some mirrors shamelessly carried this title along with an official title and the mirror maker’s name, all inscribed together to form a very long signature indeed.
