Mount Penglai (Jap. Horai) is a fairyland known to exist in the ocean somewhere in the East. It is here that legendary wizards, ageless and immortal according to the traditional Chinese belief, are said to reside. The design shown here, although the entire depiction represents the Chinese concept of the land of the immortals, is somewhat more Japanese. Pine trees grow on a gigantic rock, bamboo grows on a sandbar where a crane and a tortoise play, and geese fly through the sky, showing a clear depiction of an Imayo song (ancient popular songs) as described in The Rise and Fall of the Genji and the Heike (Jap. Genpei Josuiki) and The Tale of Soga (Jap. Soga Monogatari). The Imayo sings like this: “Tens of thousands of years on Mount Penglai (Jap. Horai-san), and a thousand autumns come round, as cranes build nests in forever-green pines and tortoises play on rocks.”
