Mirrors depicting lucky flowers and paired birds were made from the Nara Period through the early Heian Period with the lingering influence of Tang Mirrors. However, toward the latter half of the Heian Period, mirrors began to reflect budding Japanese tastes, and the motifs and designs began to show subtle differences. For example, Chinese mirrors were often decorated with a pair of phoenixes, but these birds gradually gave way to mandarin ducks and then were totally replaced by cranes, sparrows, and other birds more familiar in Japan. The shape of the mirror was also changed. Pentagon mirrors with petal-like edges began to appear, presumably patterned after plum blossoms. Thus, mirrors from these periods are evidence of greater assimilation of Chinese arts and crafts into Japanese art.
