The Khmer people built one of the earliest civilizations in Southeast Asia. During the 1st c., they established Bnam, and in the 6th c., Zhenla Kingdom, laying the foundation of today’s Cambodia. The golden age of ancient Khmer came during the 9th-13th centuries under the Angkor Dynasty. It was around this time, or the first half of the 12th c., that the temple Angkor Wat was built. A large number of finely-crafted bronzeware of the dynasty has survived to this day.
