不老不死の仙人が住み、鶴と亀が遊ぶという蓬莱山には、松・竹・梅が生い茂っているという説があり、特に室町時代の蓬莱鏡には、松竹梅が揃って描かれる場合が少なくない。松竹梅は「歳寒の三友（寒い季節に耐える三植物）」とされ、江戸時代には吉祥の画題の一つとして流行するが、この室町時代の蓬莱鏡が整理され発展したものと考えられている。
