Until glass mirrors were brought into China from the West in modern times, most mirrors cast in the East were made of copper. However, rare iron mirrors were made in China during the Han and Tang Dynasties, and some of them were brought into Japan. A few of these iron mirrors were inlaid. The mirror shown here has arabesque designs inlaid with god. Another mirror exhibiting a more refined inlaid design was excavated from a tumulus in Hita City, Oita Prefecture. Called “Iron mirror with dragon motif inlaid with gold and silver,” it has been designated as an Important Cultural Asset by the Japanese government.
