This is a segment from a calligraphy copy of the Kokin Wakashu (Collection of Japanese Poems of Ancient and Modern Time) known to have been rendered by Fujiwara-no-Kiyosuke. Kiyosuke is said to have written the said Collection at least four times in his lifetime, and the series that he created is called the Kiyosuke Version of the Collection of Japanese Poems of Ancient and Modern Poems. ‘Dairi-gire’ belongs to this Kiyosuke Version and at present, 13 different fragmented editions by different hands are recognized. The majority were written in the Kamakura Period, which actually are transcriptions or re-transcriptions of the Kiyosuke Version. This series of transcriptions is characterized by the use of raw paper and detailed footnotes and annotations in the top and bottom margins describing the original writers and other historical investigations. As a result of a comparative study, it is assumed that this segment retains the authentic style of the Kiyosuke Edition of the Collection of Japanese Poems of Ancient and Modern Time owned by the Maeda Ikutoku-Kai important cultural asset. The segment name may derive from the fact that the complete edition was passed down in the dairi, or the court. The Dairi-gire is, therefore, quite important to study the process of how the different versions have been passed down.
